Early Life and Education

Dick Cavett was born on November 19, 1936, in Gibbon, Nebraska. His parents, Alva and Erabelle Cavett, were both teachers. Cavett's mother died of cancer when he was only ten years old.

Cavett attended Lincoln Public Schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1953. He was involved in extracurricular activities such as student council, drama, and magic.

The Yale Years

In 1953, Cavett entered Yale University, where he initially studied English but later switched to drama. He was a member of the Yale Drama Society and the WYBC campus radio station. Cavett graduated from Yale in 1958.
