    I'm reading and commenting on a story from The Library of America's 'John Updike: The Collected Stories' each Wednesday until I finish the collection or give up.

    In September of 2013, I began reading a story each week from the LOA's two-volume Updike edition and posting about the stories here. With last week's post about "During the Jurassic," i've finished 62 stories -- one-third of the stories in this collection. 

    Reading those stories from Updike's early years leaves me with these overarching impressions:

    **Even the weakest stories, and there are some in this bunch, often have extraordinary sentences. 

    **Updike's male characters are often chauvinist, male-gazing horndogs. But he is merciless on them, presenting their attitude and behavior as is, without special pleading.
